Shorter days and colder mornings often result in your dog’s walks being cut back. It is completely understandable, as nobody wants to be trudging around the park in the dark and rain but decreasing your dog’s exercise can have a knock-on effect on their weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tricky part is that while activity levels drop, appetite usually does not. Your dog is still expecting the same portion at dinner time, even though they have had half the walk they normally would. Keep an eye on your dog’s weight<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To tell if your dog is at a healthy weight, you do not need scales to get a first impression:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feel for the ribs. Place your thumbs on your dog’s spine and spread your hands along their sides. You should be able to feel their ribs without pressing hard. If you can barely feel them under a layer of fat, your dog is carrying extra weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look from above. A healthy dog has a visible waist behind the ribcage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look from the side. The belly should tuck up slightly towards the back legs rather than hang down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watch for other signs. These include tiring more quickly on walks, getting out of breath easily, moving less and sleeping more than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
