That’s normal for many reptiles in winter, and usually nothing to worry about as long as their weight stays steady. A few simple checks, the right size meal and a well-stocked freezer will see you through to spring.

Why do reptiles eat less in winter?

Reptiles eat less in winter because cooler temperatures and shorter days slow down their digestion and their appetite. They rely on their surroundings to stay warm, so even a small drop in temperature makes a difference. That’s true in a heated enclosure too: when the room is colder, your heating has to work harder.

Natural seasonal rhythms play a part as well. Some species, such as royal pythons, are well known for fasting through part of the winter. Lizards and other insect-eating reptiles often slow down too.

What should you check if your reptile is eating less?

Start with temperature, lighting and weight. Together they tell you most of what you need to know.

Temperatures. Check both the warm end and the cool end of the enclosure with a reliable thermometer. A faulty thermostat is a common cause of a sudden drop in appetite.

Lighting. Keep the day and night cycle the same every day. Check that all bulbs are still working.

Weight. Weigh your reptile regularly. Eating less while weight stays steady is usually nothing to worry about.

Meal size. Offer smaller meals or leave longer between feeds. That way, less food gets refused or wasted.

Noticing weight loss, lethargy or other signs of illness? Then book an appointment with your reptile vet and take your weight records with you.

Feeding insect-eating reptiles in winter

Frozen insects make feeding easier when appetites are small. With a bag of frozen crickets in the freezer, you thaw only what you need. No live insects escaping, and nothing going to waste.

When your reptile eats less, every meal counts. DK Multi-Vit is a vitamin and mineral supplement you dust onto insects and fruit, so each smaller meal still contains a range of vitamins and minerals.

Not sure which supplement suits your lizard? Contact our team for advice.

Why feed whole prey to your snake?

Whole prey is the closest thing to what snakes and many other carnivorous reptiles eat in the wild. One mouse gives your snake muscle meat, organs and bone in one go. That means protein, fat and minerals in a natural balance. Our small mice, for example, contain around 16% protein and 6.7% fat.

Frozen prey is practical too. Live mice can bite and injure your snake, which isn’t a risk with frozen mice. Frozen prey keeps in the freezer until you need it, and we deliver it frozen to your door, so there are no last-minute trips out in bad weather.

Whole prey isn’t only for reptiles, either. Frozen mice and day old chicks are a staple for birds of prey and other carnivores too.

What size mouse does my snake need?

Choose a mouse that’s no wider than the widest part of your snake’s body. Between two sizes? Then go for the smaller one. A meal that’s too big is hard to swallow and digest, especially in winter when digestion slows down.

Size

Weight

Typically suits

Mouse Pinks

25- 100 g or 1kg

Hatchlings and very young reptiles

Mouse Fuzzies

25g

Small corn snakes, growing juvenile geckos and hatchlings.

Small Mouse

6–15 g

Growing juveniles and smaller adults

Regular Mouse

15–22 g

Larger juveniles and medium adults

Large Mouse

22–30 g

Bigger adults

Jumbo Mouse

30 g+

Large adults

Small mice: this month’s offer

Small mice are the natural next step once your snake has outgrown pinkies. Here’s how:

Thaw in the fridge. Put the mouse in a sealed bag in the fridge, ideally overnight. Never thaw frozen prey in the microwave. It heats unevenly.

Warm it gently. Once it’s fully thawed, put the sealed bag in warm water until the mouse feels warm to the touch, not hot. Many snakes show more interest in warm prey.

Check the middle. Still cold or firm? Then give it longer.

Feed with tongs. This keeps your fingers out of the way and helps your snake focus on the meal.

Never refreeze. Take away anything uneaten after a few hours and throw it away. Refreezing raises the risk of bacteria building up.

Always wash your hands and equipment after handling frozen prey. Store it separately from your own food in the freezer.

Your winter-feeding questions answered

How long do frozen mice last in the freezer?

Sealed and kept at -18°C or below, frozen mice keep well for months.
